Thermal,
TEXAS INSTRUMENTS, a pioneer in the development of light emitting diode displays, was one of the first firms to manufacture and market a succsessful thermal printhead, this new device found immediate use in this CANON. Because of the relatively large size of the total printing mechanism, which includes an advancement device, a mechanical chassis and a reel of paper tape, the machine is not really a 'pocket' calculator.
Nevertheless, the introduction of this model represented a major development in the field of miniature printing calculators.
Because many people who work with numbers require a permanent record of their calculations and because calculators with a noisy electromechanical printer are unpopular in a crowded office, this CANON initially enjoyed a good commercial reception.
However, the ticker-tape style output of the device (a 0.25 Inch paper type) was expensive and inconvenient for permanent record keeping and even checking past calculations several inches down the tape. For this reason, calculator manufacturers, did shift their design efforts away from the single-character thermal printer with ticker-paper output to printers capable of producing the same line-by-line format as the conventional adding machine. This CANON uses the original TEXAS INSTRUMENTS thermal printhead with a 4x5 dot matrix array.
